America: In The Beginning Of Sorrows

Unless a person is so involved in their private little pursuit of happiness and is too busy to even hear of what is taking place just outside of their own sphere they cannot escape the feeling that something has gone awry in America, the world.

This week’s news is but a cross section of last weeks, last months or last years news. This week we heard of a judge in Oklahoma who forced a five year old to testify in court against her rapist. After ducking under courtroom benches and chairs to avoid even looking at her rapist the defendant is then given a paltry one year sentence for the rape of the child.

Next is the story of two thugs standing outside of a polling booth in the 2008 elections intimidating voters before they enter to vote. That being hard enough to believe, now comes the report that Attorney General Eric Holder has decided not to prosecute the thugs even after a video with full audio has been made available of the incident. Is this Venezuela, Communist China or Cuba, no it is right here in America.

The third offering comes when we discover that the books of the activist group Acorn will not be made public to anyone including the media, the Justice Department or the IRS. Any average Joe with a salary of a meager 25K can be dragged into IRS hell in a heartbeat for an audit but Acorn gets a pass. Any church Catholic or protestant has to produce an accounting of every penny spent under their 501-C exemption but Acorn can spread untold millions around without a question. This double standard puts Martha Stewart in a class with Mother Theresa and Makes Bernard Madoff look like a fun loving swashbuckling pirate who just robbed the rich for the fun o

We can just throw in the nomination of a person to the Supreme Court who will keep us all on the edge of our seats and herself on the edge of credulity trying to explain just how she is sure a Latina woman will make a better justice than an ordinary white American male. (Her words not mine) Let’s not forget the visit of Israel’s Prime Minister who still doesn’t like the land for loyalty deal he is being offered by the administration in this week’s news a la carte.

Perhaps the cherry on top of this absurd sundae of bittersweet confections would have to be North Korea’s firing of a test missile. The only thing we see with more speed and less range than the North Korean missile would be the administrations vociferous albeit innocuous response to it. Maybe we can woo Kim Jong-Il with Barry Gibb’s “Its only words, but words are all I have, to take your heart away.”

The end of almost anything is often the beginning of something else. It’s the old “if one door closes, another one is going to open” adage that is at work here in America. Unfortunately seeing the end of America as we know it can only mean the beginning of one thing. Some call it socialism; some call it the new age of tolerance and diversity. By any other name it is still a sad time. The election slogan ‘yes we can’ is quickly transforming into ‘yes you will’ one news story at a time.

Yes you will be more shocked by the news day by day; yes you will see America’s nobility, dignity and moral character eroding more day by day. And you will be made more sorrowful day by day at the hearing of these incidents unless you live in a cocoon.

In a passage of the Bible often referred to as the ‘Olivet Discourse” (Mt 24) Jesus Christ was asked the question, “when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” (Mt 24:3b) After a detailed description that included famines, earthquakes, wars and rumors of wars Christ declared a new beginning. No, not the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom where the lamb lies down with the lion but the beginning of a time of sorrows that precedes his imminent return. (Mt 24:8)

What American is not made sorrowful by the daily reports of judicial quackery, legislative chicanery, and social and moral decline? So what keeps us from a making a collective response to right all the wrongs? What Christ said about the rise of sorrows is appendaged with the reasons that we are prone to tolerate them.

In its final stages powerful leadership will be needed to hold together a disintegrating society along with unwanted political force but in the interim it is pretty much nothing at all that serves as the great distracter of the rank and file. Christ said it would take no more than the everyday business of eating, drinking, marriage and daily routine to keep the gloom away. (Mt 24:38, 39) In laymen’s terms, the business of everyday life is all that’s needed to give your self the business.

It is said that the ancient philosopher Diogenes went about in broad daylight with a lit lantern looking for an honest man.” In America it may be said that we are going about with a burned out lamp and not looking for anything in particular except what pertains to our own personal world. When age, catastrophe, change or self reflection finally enters our personal realm we might then be touched by the “sorrows” that Christ spoke of, but even that is not a bad thing.

A little healthy sorrow might spur us to act; it could be the re-lighting of our lamps. You remember like the one in Lady Liberty’s hand that symbolizes the truth and the search for justice and equity, that lamp that symbolizes the original call to a “change we can believe in.”

Eight Exercises To Improve Eyesight

Many bemoan the fact that as we age our eyesight becomes poorer, but few relate this to the simple truth the eye is supported by muscles just like any other part of the body. If you do not keep them in shape they will become weaker; the muscles will lose their tone and become rigid, causing decreased elasticity in the eye which can lead to sight loss. Exercising your eyes regularly will keep them healthy and relieve eyestrain.

The increase in computer-related jobs and free time spent online has also added to many eye problems, which can be greatly aided by keeping your eyes refreshed and exercised. Eye exercises are physical therapy not just for the eye, but also the brain, due to the optic nerve which connects them both. Relieving eye tension will also ease up on your brain strain, in turn, relaxing your entire body.

The ciliary muscles of the eye tense up when we focus on nearby objects, and relax when we focus further away. Below are some exercises you can practice to not only keep your eyes healthy as you grow older, but may also improve poor vision for those already relying upon contacts or eyeglasses.

1. Sit in a chair, posture erect, spine straight, body relaxed. Keeping your body motionless while moving only your eyes, find a point you can focus on in front of you without straining and move your eyes from your lap, to this point, and back again. Repeat five times.

2. Close your eyes, placing your hands tightly over each eye so that no light gets in. The heels of your palms should rest upon your cheekbones. Breathe deeply. This relieves eye tension and strain and is very relaxing. Practice for three to five minutes.

3. Move eyes slowly upwards as far as you can, then downwards. Repeat five times. Blink rapidly to relax the e

ye muscles. Repeat this exercise, only now moving your eyes slowly from left to right and back again.

4. Gently squeeze eyes shut for three seconds, then open them and repeat five times. This is an excellent exercise to relieve computer strain on the eyes by stimulating the tear ducts.

5. Hold an object in front of you at arm’s length, waving it slowly back and forth in a figure eight while following it with your eyes. Do this for approximately 10-15 seconds. This helps stimulate the nutrient flow within the eye while improving eye coordination.

6. This exercise helps strengthen the iris and is best done at night, in front of a bright lamp. With no other lights on in the room, sit in a comfortable position facing the lamp with your eyes closed, switching the lamp on and off in time to your slow, relaxed breathing.

7. Focus on a small object at arm’s length, such as a pencil, inhale, then move it slowly in to touch the tip of your nose. Exhale, keeping your eyes on the pencil and move it slowly back out again. Repeat three times.

8. This is a fabulous method to relieve eye tension for those working in offices with access to windows. Focus on a distant object outside for eight seconds then slowly refocus your eyes on an object close at hand. Repeat three times, and often during the day, at least once per hour.

It is estimated that we, as average Americans, have between eight and ten jobs in our lifetimes. While many of these job changes may be for positive matters – a more challenging career, better advancement, more lucrative pay – the fact remains that starting a new job can be one of the biggest stresses in life. The reasons for this vary. For some of us, learning the technicalities, the ins and outs, of a new job may be the biggest burden. For others, learning the way around the building – how to get to the coffee pot and the restroom – may prove difficult. And, for some, simply learning where the new office is located may be the biggest inconvenience.

However, for the majority of new jobbers, chances are the greatest intimidation factor, the one that causes the most anxiety, is simply meeting new people. Walking into a job where everyone seems to know each other – patting each other on the back and asking about little Johnny’s soccer game – can be overwhelming for the person who knows no one. It causes a fear resembling high school, as the newcomer wonders who they will sit with at lunch. Though this may seem like an occasion drowning in discomfort, there are a few things that can be done to make it as smooth a transition as possible.

Dress the Part

It’s hard to gauge what kind of clothes to wear on the first day of the job. While many offices are listed as “business casual,” the term “casual” leaves a lot to be interpreted. For some of us, casual may be wearing slacks and a button down shirt, for others it may be wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Still, for a few, casual may simply mean wearing to work what was worn to bed.

For a new job, it’s best to err on the side of caution and prepare to be overdressed rather than underdressed. Wearing a suit while everyone else is wearing slacks and blouses will go over much better than wearing jeans while everyone else is wearing a suit.

Don’t One up People

There seems to be an unwritten rule laced within the insecurities of each person, a rule that tells us to “try to impress people” when we are nervous. While this may sometimes serve the intended purpose, more often than not, it backfires. Take for instance this example: as a newcomer overhears an established coworker say that they just had their first paper published in a medical journal, the newcomer steps in to speak of their two articles previously published. While the person who is new is just trying to ‘look good” in front of coworkers, trying to impress them can come across more as arrogant, and a little desperate. To make matters worse, when the impressing is tagged onto a coworker’s own boasting, the newcomer looks like someone out to one-up everyone else. This, ultimately, results in not impressing others, and just depressing yourself.

Ask Questions

People like to talk… about themselves, about their kids, about the time they landed a merger between two giant corporations. Showing interest in a coworker will make them interested in you: people are often their own favorite subjects. If you’re having trouble mingling with others, simply pick something out about them and ask questions. Point to a picture on their desk and ask if that’s their spouse, ask them where they grew up or how it is they landed a job at the company. And, if you’re having trouble with an aspect of your job, ask questions about it. People are often more than willing to share their knowledge; most people will jump at the chance to convey their own intelligence.

Be Professional

Everyone is not professional at their job at one point or another. If you work somewhere long enough, a few flawed moments are sure to creep in. People show up late, or put their legs on top of the desk, stretching out as they type a memo. People take too long making personal phone calls or spend an hour in the bathroom talking about their coworker’s botched perm job. People take an extra long lunch, sneaking back into the office when their boss isn’t working, or take a ream of computer paper home for their personal use. While everyone is guilty of being unprofessional at times, don’t use these times at the beginning of your job. You see, we build to that.

Take People Up on Invitations

Jobs are often filled with the opportunities to be social. From a happy hour to a lunch outing, from a Tupperware party to a company softball game, behind every cubicle wall there is the ability to get to know your coworkers. While you may hold onto the notion that you are at a job to work and not at a job to make friends, it’s proven that those who enjoy their coworkers enjoy their job much more. So, when coworkers invite you to after hour get-togethers, take them up on it. You don’t have to show up to every outing, or be the life of the party, donning the proverbial lamp shade on your head, but attend and get to know the people with whom you work. Show them that you are a team player both in the office and outside of it.

Starting a new job can be uncomfortable, but it’s something everyone goes through. Heeding the above advice and just relaxing can make it easier. If that doesn’t work, keep this in mind: the person at the company who has worked there the longest – the person who knows everyone, who remembers peoples’ birthdays, who gives the toast at the company Christmas party – even they were once a new employee.

How to Make a Winter Crafts Snow Globe

Snow globes are great for any occasion or holiday, simply by changing what you use to create your scene. Just let your imagination run wild!

For example, make a harvest scene for Thanksgiving, a ghostly haunted house for Halloween, a red Valentine heart or colorful Easter/Spring display for the holiday of your choice.

Other themes could include a special birthday or event, sports team, favorite cartoon character or superhero, seashell or Victorian motif, to name just a few.

Once you have an event or theme in mind, it’s easy to gather together the elements for a really unique custom made creation.

WINTER CRAFTS SNOW GLOBE

Materials:

Clear Glass Jar with a tight lid (pickle, pimento, jelly, baby food)

Small Waterproof Ornaments, Figures or Decorations

Distilled Water or Water that has been boiled and cooled

Clear Silicone Sealant (Aquarium Sealant) or Florist Clay

Egg Shells or Foil Confetti

Glitter

Glycerin or Mineral Oil

Optional: Plastic Lid to fit inside the jar’s lid, Circle of Fabric, Ribbon or Lace

1. Choose a Clean Dry Glass Jar – A baby food jar is perfect for a small kids craft, pimento jars have a unique ball shape, and pickle jars are large enough to allow you to add several elements to your scene. Just fit your jar to your desired final effect. Remove any labels and food residue.

2. Plan your Snow Globe Scene – Search your sewing kit and home craft supplies for materials and inspiration. You can make people, animals, trees – you name it – from craft foam. Sewing findings are a great source of small decorations too. Also consider miniatures at the craft or hobby store. Remember to shop the day after a holiday for lots of discounted items!

3. Secure the Figures and Decorations inside the jar lid with silicone sealant or florist clay. In order to elevate the scene so it is in clear view, glue a plastic lid inside the jar lid or build up the area with a little extra florist clay. Be sure to leave the edges clear so you have room to screw on the lid. Set aside to dry.

4. Prepare Your “Snow” using the shell from a hardboiled egg. Separate the shell from the membrane, place in a sturdy ziploc bag, and crush with a rolling pin. Finer particles will fall more slowly in the snow globe and have a more pleasing effect. However, avoid crushing eggshell into a powder as it will simply float in the water instead of falling gently.

Depending upon your theme, you can change your “snow” to go along with it. Try themed confetti available at craft stores to add an interesting element to your creation. If you’re doing a Halloween or Thanksgiving scene, look for foil leaf confetti in fall colors. For Easter you can use foil flower confetti. For a sports theme, use glitter in your favorite team’s colors.

The possibilities are endless and ensure that you are creating a one-of-a-kind snow globe!

5. Fill the Snow Globe – When you are pleased with your snow globe scene, fill the jar with distilled water, leaving a little space at the top to accommodate the figures. Add several drops of glycerin to keep the snow suspended and floating properly. Mineral oil or baby oil can also be used in place of the water and glycerin.

6. Add Snow and Glitter – When adding eggshells, make sure you have enough to cover the lid once it has settled to the bottom. Use silver glitter along with the egg shells to make shimmery snow – use one teaspoon of glitter for every inch of water. If you’re adventurous, experiment with different effects. Use a drop or two of colored lamp oil to create a swirling effect. Add food coloring to the water or use different colored glitters.

Close the jar tightly and shake your snow globe. Observe how the snow falls and the overall look. Tweak till you get the desired effect by adding a little more snow, glitter or confetti.

7. Seal the Dome – When you’re sure the figures and scenery are arranged to your satisfaction, and the snow to water ratio looks good, add a bead of silicone sealant around the threads of the lid and close tightly.

8. Add Final Touches – For a more decorative and finished look, cut a circle of pretty fabric a little larger than the jar lid. Secure to the lid with an elastic band. Hot glue a piece of ribbon or lace over the elastic band.
